I entered this photo in Aimee’s Greeblepix for January. I like the angle, something I don’t usually do, and the cute little green leaves that look like they’ve been dipped in ice crystals. I got up before the baby a couple mornings ago, looked at the frost covered ground outside, swapped my usual lens for my macro and headed outside to see what I could find. This little half alive, half dying twig was wedged up against my front step among a family of weeds and grasses that are growing where they shouldn’t be growing. That day, I didn’t mind them so much and was intrigued to find these adorable little leaves that are smaller than my pinky nail.
Because they are so tiny and I was so close to them, I had to use a small aperture to widen my depth of field. f/8.0 was decent but that also meant I was letting less light in, which caused me to increase the ISO to 1250. I can’t remember if I had the vibration reduction (VR) on but I think my shutter speed of 1/160 should’ve been fast enough for this focal length. Shooting in manual mode keeps me thinking constantly about how each setting affects the other. It’s a good exercise for my mind.
What are your thought processes when you shoot?

this is lovely! when i shoot, i think about the composition. i don’t do a lot of cropping afterwards and do what i can to get the shot i want when i see it. since going back to shoot more in manual, i am acutely aware that i like to underexpose my pictures a little for richer color, plus it helps me to not blow out the highlights.

Love this shot! Really, really love it.
I don’t have much of a process. LOL. I’m not a very technical photographer. I shoot by instinct and emotion. Sometimes it works..sometimes it doesn’t.

@Lu: Oh yes, composition is so so very important! It can completely make or break an image, especially when there just isn’t room to crop. And I also underexpose a bit too, to make sure I capture all the detail. Very good points!
@Brooke: Thanks for the questions. I think most photographers grab the 60mm macro or 105mm, which gets you in a bit closer. You can also look into extenders and other options if getting a dedicated macro isn’t in your budget. I haven’t gotten any canvas prints yet but if you’re a professional photog, you can order from Simply Canvas. http://www.simplycanvas.com/ I think Costco, Michaels and other consumer labs also do canvas, but I don’t know what the quality is like with them. When I do get a canvas print done, I will post it here for sure!
@Christina: Emotion is a big part in photography, for sure and having that instinct sure helps!
