One challenge I have with colour is when shooting vibrant reds and pinks. I’ve heard that Nikons capture reds differently but I haven’t really looking into it that much, nor can I really compare with other brands. I do find that we have to be careful with those tones. So with the photo above, I chose to do a desaturated, dark tone to try something different. I used the adjustment brush in Lightroom 2.0 to touch up the wood on the pier by increasing the contrast and clarity, just for a little more texture. Cropped and tweaked here and there and that’s about it.
Here’s the SOOC if you’d like to compare:

This was taken on one of the last summer nights we enjoyed outside. Stacy’s Theme Thursday is a round up of our favourite summer shots and this one seemed representative. I was wondering why Sophie suddenly crouched and my first thought was… “uh oh… diaper time”! But it wasn’t that thankfully. She was just mimicking me as I got down low to capture her at her eye level. Silly monkey!

Wonderful shot and love the way you processed it. She is such a little cutie and so funny mimicking mommy! Yes, Nikons tend to oversaturate the reds. The D50 I have heard is really bad, and I have to really watch reds or they go supersonic. A global desat of reds is needed often.

This is really gorgeous Laura. I like the adjustments you made, it makes the colors pop, especially the red. Too funny what you said about the diaper thing, I know that move! ha-ha.

I like your color editing. The SOOC shot is ok, but when you darken and saturate the image it really brings out her face and her outfit. I love what it did to those cute shoes she’s wearing!

She’s such a cute little monkey. :o)
I have heard the same thing about reds and Nikon, and I’ve had the same experience…but like you, I can’t compare with other brands. I love my camera, tho!
