Well, maybe we didn’t quite have a snow storm, but yesterday we got hit with some snow and I just had to get outside to take some pictures of it. Shooting in snow can be quite challenging as high levels of white usually fool the camera’s meter. I can compensate for this by increasing my exposure (based on my built in meter) so that the snow doesn’t turn out all grey and muddy while still retaining some of the snowflake detail. I’ll write a tutorial about metering some day, which will explain in detail why this happens.
I love it when the snow covers our messy lawn.

I love snow pics even though I am totally over winter right now. Poor little crocus, {kiss}.

Laura, I’d love a tutorial on metering for snowy shots. I’ve taken a lot this winter, as we get snow here in Maine, and I’ve ended up with a lot of brown tinged shots. I’ve tweaked the white balance and such in Bibble but I think I may have lost some of the details in not metering correctly, like you mentioned.
Also, thanks for your response about the uv filter.

That image of your crocus covered with snow is so beautiful! Our crocus isn’t up yet. Hopefully soon!

isn’t that purple pretty! We are still very much in the midst of winter. Over the weekend we had a raging blizzard, nearly 6 ft high snowdrifts, and painful temps: today we’re the coldest in the province at 42 below zero. Yes, no kidding. I love taking snow photos. If you’re curious you can see some at my blog and Flickr too.
